In relocation, packing is among the most crucial tasks – when done efficiently, you’re sure to have a smooth move. However, if the task is accomplished in a rash and improper manner then you’ll most likely encounter more hassles in the course of the activity, especially when it comes to unpacking and organizing in your new home. Spending extra time and effort in working to perfect this task will surely pay off in the end when you won’t have to stress about figuring out the appropriate location for everything.
The first thing that you have to do is come up with a relocation plan including a schedule for every tasks and even task assignments. As much as possible stick to this plan and accomplish each task as scheduled.
Assign each family member to handle the packing of his personal belongings and also help in packing the communal objects in the house, such as in the kitchen, dining area and living room.
Before proceeding to the actual task, it is practical to first clean up the place and de-clutter. This helps you determine if some things are still worth bringing to your new home or not and can lessen the things that you’ll have to pack.
In deciding which to bring and which not to, consider the space available in your new place. Take the object’s dimensions and determined if it can work with your new home.
Make sure to prepare the place for the activity – choose a flat and spacious area in the house and get all packing supplies ready (i.e. boxes of different sizes, packing tapes, markers, bubble wraps, packing papers, etc.).
Provide extra protection for fragile and valuable belongings. Apply foam or soft padding at the bottom of the box, bubble wrap the object and fill the gaps in the box with paper.
Categorize everything and label the boxes according to their contents and to which room they should be placed, and attach a list of all the contents on the box.
Don’t overload the containers and keep heavy boxes small. To be secure, tape the edges of the boxes to prevent them from coming apart or tearing.
Don’t do the task all on your own; invite some friends over to help you or hire some assistance. Be there to supervise the activity to make sure everything is organized and goes according to plan.
Pack those that you rarely use first and prepare a separate suitcase for your necessities to make them more accessible even before you’re done unpacking in your new place.
